Origin & History

Developed in France in the 16th century, Basset Hounds were bred from bloodhounds to hunt small game, particularly rabbits. The name 'Basset' comes from the French word 'bas' meaning low. Their short legs allowed hunters to follow them on foot. They were brought to England in the 1800s and to America where the AKC recognized them in 1885.

Training Your Basset Hound

Training Approach

Use food rewards generously - Bassets are highly food motivated. Keep training sessions short and fun. Never use harsh corrections as they can become more stubborn.

Training Tips

  • Use their love of food as training motivation
  • Keep training sessions short and interesting
  • Be patient - they learn at their own pace
  • Start recall training early (but don't expect perfection)
  • Consider scent work activities to engage their instincts

Common Challenges

  • Notoriously stubborn and independent
  • Will follow their nose and ignore commands
  • Not naturally inclined to obey quickly
  • Recall can be nearly impossible when on a scent
