Origin & History

Borzoi were developed by Russian aristocracy beginning in the 17th century for hunting wolves in packs. Their name comes from the Russian word 'borzyi' meaning swift. They were bred from greyhound-type dogs with thick-coated Russian breeds. Nearly eliminated during the Russian Revolution, they were preserved by dogs exported earlier. The AKC recognized them in 1891.
