Origin & History

Bull Terriers were developed in 19th century England from crosses between Bulldogs and terriers, originally for blood sports. When those were banned, breeders refined them as gentlemen's companions. James Hinks created the modern white Bull Terrier in the 1860s. The distinctive egg-shaped head developed over time. The AKC recognized them in 1885.

Frequently Asked Questions

Bull Terriers are not inherently aggressive toward people. They are typically friendly and affectionate with their families. However, they may not tolerate other dogs well and have strong prey drive. Proper socialization from puppyhood is essential. Their fighting heritage means dog-to-dog aggression can occur without proper training.
