Origin & History

Chihuahuas are believed to descend from the Techichi, a companion dog kept by the Toltec civilization in Mexico. The modern breed was discovered in Chihuahua, Mexico in the mid-1800s. Americans visiting Mexico brought the tiny dogs home, and the AKC recognized them in 1904. They have been popular companion dogs ever since.
