Dandies originated in the border region between Scotland and England in the early 1700s, developed to hunt otters and badgers. They are the only breed named after a fictional character - Dandie Dinmont from Sir Walter Scott's 1815 novel 'Guy Mannering.' The AKC recognized them in 1886. They remain rare but devoted.
