Origin & History

English Setters descended from setting spaniels over 400 years ago. They 'set' or crouched to indicate game birds. Edward Laverack and R. Purcell Llewellin developed distinct lines in the 19th century - Laverack focused on show type, Llewellin on field dogs. The AKC recognized them in 1884. Both lines continue today.
