The Spanish Water Dog has documented presence on the Iberian Peninsula since 1110 AD. Three regional populations developed for different purposes. The breed nearly went extinct during the Spanish Civil War but was revived in the 1970s. FCI recognition came in 1999, AKC in 2015.
