Understanding pet food labels can feel overwhelming. This guide breaks down what those numbers and terms actually mean, based on guidelines from the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO).
The Guaranteed Analysis
All pet food labels require a Guaranteed Analysis section. At minimum, this must include:
- Minimum crude protein percentage
- Minimum crude fat percentage
- Maximum crude fiber percentage
- Maximum moisture percentage
The word "crude" refers to the testing method, not the quality of the nutrient. These are minimums and maximums, meaning the actual content may vary within those bounds.
The AAFCO Statement
Look for the AAFCO nutritional adequacy statement. This tells you whether the food is complete and balanced for a specific life stage:
- "Complete and balanced for all life stages" - Suitable for puppies/kittens through adults
- "Complete and balanced for adult maintenance" - For adult pets only
- "For intermittent or supplemental feeding only" - Not nutritionally complete; use as a treat or topper
AAFCO does not approve, certify, or endorse any pet food. They set the standards that states use to regulate pet food sold in their jurisdiction.
Ingredient List Rules
Ingredients are listed in descending order by weight before processing. Keep in mind:
- Meat listed first doesn't mean the food is mostly meat. Fresh meat contains 70% water, so its weight drops significantly after cooking.
- "Meal" (like chicken meal) is already rendered and contains more protein per pound than fresh meat.
- Ingredient splitting can make certain ingredients appear further down the list (e.g., listing corn, corn gluten, corn bran separately).
New Label Changes Coming
AAFCO has approved new pet food labeling guidelines that will roll out over the next six years. Changes include standardized nutrition information similar to human food labels, clearer ingredient statements, and storage instructions. By 2030, all pet food packaging should reflect these updates.
