Origin & History

The Belgian Sheepdog originated in Belgium in the late 1800s, developed by breeder Nicolas Rose at Château Groenendael (hence the European name). They were bred for herding and guarding. During World Wars I and II, they served as message carriers, Red Cross dogs, and in other military roles. The AKC recognized them as a distinct breed in 1912.
