Origin & History

Named for the Belgian village of Tervuren where they were developed, this breed originated in the late 1800s as a herding dog. They are one of four Belgian Shepherd varieties. During World War I, they served in various military capacities. The AKC recognized them as a separate breed in 1959. Today they excel in obedience, agility, herding, and as therapy and assistance dogs.
