Origin & History

Cairn Terriers originated in the Scottish Highlands where they hunted rats, foxes, and other vermin hiding in stone cairns (rock piles). They share ancestry with the Scottish, West Highland White, and Skye Terriers. The breed was officially named in 1912 and recognized by the AKC in 1913. They gained fame as Toto in the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz.
