Greater Swiss Mountain Dogs are the oldest and largest of the four Swiss Mountain Dog breeds. They were used for draft work, herding, and guarding in the Swiss Alps. They nearly went extinct but were revived in the early 1900s. The AKC recognized them in 1995. They remain relatively rare.
