Origin & History

Developed in the Swiss canton of Bern, Bernese Mountain Dogs were farm dogs used for drafting carts, driving cattle, and guarding property. They are one of four Swiss Sennenhund breeds, distinguished by their long coat. Nearly extinct by the end of the 19th century, they were revived by Swiss fanciers and recognized by the AKC in 1937.
