Origin & History

Leonbergers were developed in Leonberg, Germany in the 1840s, supposedly to resemble the lion on the town's crest. They were bred from Newfoundlands, Saint Bernards, and Pyrenean Mountain Dogs. They nearly went extinct after both World Wars. The AKC recognized them in 2010.
