Origin & History

Icelandic Sheepdogs arrived in Iceland with Viking settlers around 900 AD. They became essential for herding sheep and ponies in Iceland's harsh terrain. The breed nearly went extinct but was saved through dedicated breeding efforts. The AKC recognized them in 2010. They remain Iceland's national dog.
