The Xoloitzcuintli is an ancient Mexican breed with over 3,500 years of history. Named after the Aztec god Xolotl and the Aztec word for dog (itzcuintli), they were considered sacred. They nearly went extinct but were revived in the 1950s. AKC recognition came in 2011.
